We have recently been appointed to design a multiple unit housing scheme for a plot of land in Enfield, London EN1. The challenging site sits behind flats just off the main road though Enfield and is currently occupied by a series of garages. PAD studio have been asked by the developer to look into the feasibility of removing the garages and providing a series of new homes on this otherwise residual piece of land.
We explored a range of options looking at providing 2-4 homes to meet the space standards outlined in the London Housing Design Guide. It was important to us that each housing unit had access to their own private external space, not overlooked by neighbouring properties. As a result, each unit has a south facing external courtyard accessible from the ground floor living accommodation. All our projects place a great deal of importance on providing contextual buildings which maximise access to natural light and views. We see that housing schemes such as this provide a perfect opportunity to provide these qualities in smaller, affordable projects; with often restrictive sites and challenging budgets.
The project has just been submitted for Pre Application discussion with the Local Authority, with a full Planning submission expected towards the end of the year. We also have a series of similar housing projects to undertake in the Enfield area over the next few months.
