Another academic year has begun and new students, eager to start the process of 'becoming an architect' have started their training.
Many are unaware of the true nature of architectural practice, often this only becomes clearer after many years practicing. This year has started with the art of observation. The Survey Drawing project requires students to observe, measure and research a chosen building around Portsmouth. Their goal is to draw a pencil, pen and rendered elevation of their building. Many students have never used a drawing board or tape measure or observed a building in this way - examining the detail of windows and doors, that they have frames and there is thickness. There are many considerations: material junctions, age, weathering, shadow and light to explore and understand. Importantly they must obtain critical dimensions and make informed judgments where they cannot measure.
Here is a small selection of the outstanding drawings produced by this year’s students.
