The challenging site located in Enfield, London EN1 lies behind flats just off the main road and is currently occupied by garages. The property developer required a contemporary housing scheme that maximized the potential of the site both economically and aesthetically by providing a series of new homes on this otherwise residual piece of land. We explored a range of options looking at providing up to four homes which would meet the space standards outlined in the London Housing Design Guide. It was important to us that each housing unit had access to their own private external space and not overlooked by neighbouring properties. As a result, each unit has a south facing external courtyard accessible from the ground floor living accommodation. All our projects place a great deal of importance on providing contextual buildings which maximise access to natural light and views. We see that housing schemes such as this provide a perfect opportunity to provide these qualities in smaller, affordable projects; with often restrictive sites and challenging budgets. The project was granted Planning Permission in spring 2017.
