The current pavilion has been derelict for a number of years and is not suitable for serving the new facilities which now exist on both sides of the public footpath. New all-weather courts have been created to the west and the existing grass courts to the east are currently being developed into international standard courts. PAD were approached to design a new pavilion which addresses both sets of courts and provide a permanent base for the Canoe Lake Tennis Club. The building will also host a wide range of sports and community classes for all ages throughout the year. The new pavilion has been designed to be as transparent and delicate as possible. At ground and first floor level, large openings and windows allow views into and through the building from the footpath towards the grass courts; enabling a visual connection to be established across the wider site. All glazing at ground floor has the ability to be secured at night through finely detailed mesh shutters which slide into recessed brick pockets and allow light to pass thorough them. A slim roof floats above the largely glazed first floor and creates covered outdoor seating space. Cladding details and finishes play with light and shadow to reduce the impact of the first floor and emphasise the roof line.
